Αshtanga Mysore self practice community sessions

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga represents a system of yogic study, as established by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009), who taught the method incomparably for more than 70 years.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a system of physical postures intimately linked with the breath, combining specific sequences of postures (asanas), synchronized with the breath (vinyasa), while maintaining an internal focus of attention (dristhi).

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is traditionally practiced “individually” (Mysore self-practice); in the group, each practitioner is performing the asanas following his/her “internal/ own” rhythm, according to his/her needs and ability, under the guidance of the teacher, being progressively guided to personal development and deeper understanding of the postures and the Ashtanga system in total. This unique method has become known as “Mysore style”.

Another method of practicing and learning the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, is “led” or “guided” practice. In this type of practice, practitioners follow the “external/ common” rhythm of the teacher in the evolution of asanas (asana and vinyasa counting). The above method is supposed to complement the traditional “Mysore” practice.
